In 1989, gym manager Lou meets a woman named Jackie working out at the gym and falls in love with her. Jackie,unbeknownst to her, had gotten a job at Lou's father's, Lou Sr., shooting range after having sex with Lou's brother-in-law J.J. Jackie is passing through town to get to a bodybuilding competition in Las Vegas. Lou offers her steroids, which Jackie initially refuses but ends up taking. The two have sex and Jackie asks to stay at Lou's apartment.Lou and Jackie have dinner with J.J. and Beth, Lou's sister who is being abused by J.J. but refuses to do anything about it. J.J. reveals to Lou about having sex with Jackie and Lou gets mad at her while driving home, only letting her back into the car after they narrowly avoid FBI agents searching for Lou's mother. The next day, Lou and Jackie discover that J.J. beat Beth to the point that she was hospitalized; at the hospital, Lou Sr. visits and acknowledges that the two are dating. Still feeling the effects of the steroids, Jackie breaks into J.J.'s house and brutally attacks him, beating him to death with such force that his entire jaw is severed.
